European countries face many common challenges as a result of the ageing population and look to each other for examples of sustainable policies and good practice. The European Union seeks to support its Member States to tackle common challenges in a number of ways.
Through the open method of coordination (OMC), the EU provides a framework within which countries can share information, exchange and develop policy solutions. EU countries have agreed common objectives for long-term care of access for all, quality care and affordable, sustainable care. EU Member States report to each other regularly on the fulfilment of these objectives.
The European Commission has also issued a number of communications on demographic change and inter-generational solidarity with a view to gathering ideas about how the EU can support Member States through policy cooperation, legislation and funding. In addition, the long-standing European Social Fund co-finances projects aimed at improving skills levels in public services, e.g. for social and health care staff working in long-term care.
ESN is in dialogue with European institutions and stakeholders so that social directors can help shape European and national policies on long-term care for older people.
