In 2010, ESN launched a working group that has been working closely with the European Commission in the implementation of the European Pact for Mental Health and Wellbeing. The group has also been exchanging good practice about the way people with mental health problems are approached in various European countries. They also contributed to the debate about establishment of partnerships by sharing examples of cooperation between different stakeholders in their respective countries. They have met four times from July 2010 to march 2011.
5th meeting, Brussels, Sept 2011 - ESN Working Group on Mental Health launched at the European Parliament their report Mental Health and Wellbeing in Europe: A person-centred community approach in an event hosted by Nessa Childers MEP and in which the Group presented the result of the work they accomplished in 2010 and 2011. The event brought together approximately 80 delegates from across Europe, including senior management, professionals, researchers and service users, in a joint effort to promote a person-centred community approach to mental health and wellbeing.
4th meeting, Berlin, March 2011 - the Group looked at examples of public and private initiatives, strategies, and programmes - aiming to promote positive mental health, prevent mental ill health-related disorders, and retain or reintegrate people with mental health problems back into work.
3rd meeting, Lisbon, Nov 2010 - the Group met in Lisbon in the framework of the European Conference on Combating Stigma and Promoting Social Inclusion and focused on the concept of recovery - as the expression of a personalised approach to mental health as a model of combating social exclusion.
2nd meeting, Copenhagen, Sept 2010 - the Group discussed the 8 priority areas of work agreed during the first meeting. They looked at rights implementation, the voice of users of social services experiencing mental health problems, the development of personalized care, as well as the promotion of education and awareness raising campaigns to promote the social inclusion of people with a mental health issue. Discussions focused on the personalization approach and the different concepts related to it; human rights implementation, personal recovery and rehabilitation, building strategic cooperation between all relevant stakeholders and policy.
1st meeting, Brighton, July 2010 - the Group discussed how health and social services work together in the field of mental health throughout the life cycle by looking at 3 age cohorts: children and young people, people of a working age and older people. They took into account values and rights, guiding policy and daily practice and the government level responsible for planning and delivery.
ESN strongly supports an individual approach to care of people with mental health problems and for this purpose, it is necessary to build partnerships between health, social and community services in order to improve the lives of people with a mental health issue. To this end in the Lisbon conference above ESN launched the poster An Individual Approach Means Working Together.
