The initiative takes place in community settings, whether in large cities or small towns, and either across organisations or through a single organisation. Citizens and social welfare organisations are actively involved. The goal is to promote volunteer projects with older people who, in turn, provide lifestyle advice and problem-solving support to older people and their families, network with community actors, and organise help for older people to live in their own homes for as long as possible.

There are approximately 355 'Seniorenbüros' in Germany, with 90 in North Rhine-Westphalia, all of which are managed by professionals and volunteers. The 'Seniorenbüros' in Dortmund offer drop-in advice services from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday through Friday, on local leisure activities, medical and technical aids, home care services, and support for family caregivers.

The 'Seniorenbüros' also arrange home visits for elderly people who are vulnerable to isolation, have physical disabilities that limit their ability to live independently, or require carer support at home.

Furthermore, the 'Seniorenbüros' host public information events or seminars on a variety of topics, including dementia, care systems, finance, and public care insurance.

Lessons: The importance of agreeing at the local council level to support the 'Seniorenbüros,' as there is no legal obligation; The city council requires engaged and enthusiastic social workers.
