Following a collaboration with the City of Stockholm, a day care centre with 20 places was established in 2003. The goal of the day care centre was to provide an alternative to long-term care in residential institutions by developing and implementing activities that allow older people with dementia to remain as independent and active as possible while remaining in their familiar surroundings.

This initiative was developed through collaboration between the cities of Riga and Stockholm, with mutual learning and an exchange of experiences that resulted in the development of a day care centre. Riga City Welfare Department, Riga Social Service Office, Ziemeu district, and Stockholm Maria Gamla district were all involved.

Aim: Delay placement in a long-term care facility; Ensure service users' safety; Maintain service users' physical and mental abilities and assist them in maintaining an active lifestyle.
