The initiative, which spans the Borough of Sefton in north-west England, is made up of a number of strands that help build the workforce and offer assistance to people with dementia and their caregivers.

The first strand entails the provision of a thorough programme of dementia training that is accessible to council employees, service providers, carers and family members, as well as partner organisations in the volunteer, community, and religious (VCF) sector.

The second is the Dementia Provider Forum, which has representatives from Sefton's care providers, the local government, the health sector, carers, and the VCF sector and meets four times annually. The Forum promotes the exchange of best practises and has backed projects like the libraries' "Memory Box" programme and, more recently, the recording of recollection materials for the "Forgotten Voices" initiative.

The third strand focuses on "Dementia Friends" training. Six volunteers will receive training to become dementia champions, while 36 council employees have already received training. The Champions have promised to train an additional 100 dementia friends as part of their pledge.

The plan was put into place in accordance with the Dementia Strategy and in response to Sefton's steadily rising senior population. A rise in the number of people living with dementia will be a natural result of this. Therefore, the project seeks to enhance public and professional knowledge of dementia and promote an educated and effective direct care workforce.
