The European Semester is the cycle of coordination of economic and social policies across between the European Commission and EU member states. It was designed to help achieve the objectives set in the Europe 2020 Strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. Every year, the European Commission produces an analysis of each country’s situation in a number of policy areas including social policies. These analyses or or “Country reports” lay the ground, together with the National Reform Programmes (NRPs), drafted by national governments, for the so-called Country-Specific Recommendations (CSRs), which advise national governments on what measures they take in their future policies.
