Following the first meeting of our Working Group on the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we are publishing a policy briefing on how social services can play an increasing role in the eradication of poverty.

Why social services matter

Local and regional social services have a crucial role to play in implementing the SDGs. Most underlying policies and investments are a shared responsibility across levels of government, and it is estimated by the OECD that

65% of the 169 targets underlying the 17 SDGs will not be reached without proper engagement of and coordination with local and regional authorities that usually have a responsibility for social services.

In our briefing we outline recommendations for connecting to social services in ways that can improve implementation of the SDGs.

  • The SDGs can be a tool to strengthen the voice of social services
  • Improve social services funding
  • Build cooperation for better data and indicators on the SDGs and local practice
  • Enhance the capacity of social services professionals
  • Engage social services in dialogue platforms to improve implementation

Eradicating poverty: the role of social services

The Agenda 2030 principle of “leaving no-one behind” means ending extreme poverty and reducing inequalities, disparities and all forms of discrimination. Every day, social services are faced with the challenge not only to provide resources and services needed to raise people above the poverty line, but to also ensure they remain out of poverty, particularly in times of crisis and shocks.
