On 1 October we are launching our working group on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The aim of this working group is to support progress towards the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) focused on social inclusion. Working between 2018 and 2021, the group will focus on a different SDG each year to discuss how social services can accelerate the implementation of social SDGs.

The first meeting of this working group will take place in Brussels, on 1 and 2 October 2018, and will focus on the implementation of the SDG 1: the eradication of poverty. Key speakers from International organisations, research institutes and the European Commission will share what they are doing in sustainable development:

Tadashi Matsumoto from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) will share the territorial approach to the Sustainable Development Goals which they are developing to involve cities and regions in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Christina Behrendt from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) will present the importance of having comprehensive and universal social protection across the life cycle to fighting poverty and achieving social inclusion.

Adriana Conconi from the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative will explain The Global Multidimensional Poverty Index as a tool for achieving the SDGs.

Serban Scrieciu, from DG for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, European Commission. He will share with participants what DG EMPL is doing to contribute to the implementation of the SDGs across the EU.

Following key presentations above, social services managers from across Europe will assess what strategies they can employ to successfully implement the SDGs at their local or regional level. Marthe van Laarhoven from Utrecht Municipality and Gemma Parera from Barcelona County Council will discuss how their local social services are contributing to the eradication of poverty.

If you agree that social services have a key role to play in the implementation of the SDGs and would like to be part of the working group, please contact Leyre Merchan Paules, Policy Officer at ESN, for more information on future activities.
