The phase of engagement-The convening session, alliance building, and problem exploration are all tasks of the initial engagement phase. More specifically, the engagement seeks to align expectations and goals between the team and the family (both teens and parents). Among the tasks of the middle phase are alliance maintenance and problem-solving by focusing on intervention goals. The middle stages are completed separately by parents and adolescents.

During the middle phase with parents, they are engaged separately and asked why they chose to use counselling. It is critical to allow them to "save their face" in front of others.

The middle phase with adolescents is based on identifying family secrets while allowing the adolescent to "save his face" and express criticism in a safe environment. Feelings about absent parents, their sexuality, or other aspects may be included.

Middle Phase: Conjoint Work - Another aspect of the middle phase is joint work, in which progress is made individually and the impact is evaluated. This will result in constructive dialogues, shared communication, and conflict resolution. The people involved in the counseling must agree on any changes to the family's goals that are required.

Closing Phase Tasks - Among the closing phase tasks are the review and acknowledgement of adolescents' and parents' achievements. Closing should also include a relapse prediction and a prevention outlook. It should come to an end with disengagement.
