Digital economy represents an area of strategic economic importance for EU Member States so that they can be competitive worldwide and contribute to the creation of the so called knowledge-based society. On 21 April, civil society organisations were called to debate the opportunities and obstacles of the digital market in order to foster e-inclusion and e-skills.
ESN contributes to an SPC Peer Review on the application of the Active Ageing Index at the local level in Berlin, 14-15 April.
On 31 May 2016, ESN launched the study ‘Investing in Children’s Services, Improving Outcomes’ at the European Parliament in Brussels.
On 13 April 2016, ESN participated in the final conference of the IMPact project in Brussels. Funded by the European Commission’s 2007-2013 PROGRESS programme, IMPact has produced a guide for public authorities willing to develop new or evaluate existing personal household services and policies.

The fourth meeting of ESN’s disability working group took place in Sofia, Bulgaria, on 5 April 2016. Together with service users from Bulgaria and the UK, ESN members discussed ways to involve service users in the design, implementation and evaluation of services.

In Germany, the ‘Education and Participation Act’ offers discretionary support for vulnerable children and young people through targeted educational support, on top of regular welfare benefits. This article shows how it is implemented at local level.
On 21st March, ESN was actively involved in the European Commission’s Annual Convention for Inclusive Growth in Brussels. CEO John Halloran spoke at the workshop on EU funds and a side event on long-term unemployment jointly organised by ESN, Eurocities and Eurodiaconia, and Policy Director Alfonso Lara Montero acted as Rapporteur in the workshop on active inclusion.
On 15th March, ESN took part in the third and last stakeholder forum of the research project MoPAct (Mobilising the Potential of Active Ageing in Europe)
The final outputs of the ‘For Quality! – European project for quality and services in personal care and household services’ are published, giving an overview of policies and practices, recommendations for EU policy-makers, and a toolkit with good practices.

On 10-12 February 2016, more than 500 participants from 70 countries gathered in the United Nations’ headquarters in Vienna (Austria) to discuss inclusive education and ICT for children with disabilities at the Zero project’s annual conference.

The fourth meeting of ESN’s Working Group on Ageing and Care took place in Mechelen, Belgium, on 11-12 February 2016, hosted by ESN member, the Flemish Association of Directors of Social Services. It looked at common challenges and new demands for training and skills development, support for family carers and workforce planning, including recruitment and retention.
ESN contributed to an SPC Peer Review on the Social Community Teams in The Hague, Netherlands on 19-20 January.
We are delighted to launch the new website for our annual conference – this year we are partnering with the Netherlands Presidency of the Council of the European Union to bring the event to the World Forum in The Hague on 20-22 June 2016.
