The Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Social Welfare (IRSSV) was established in 1996 with the aim of creating and maintaining continuous information support to the ministry responsible for social welfare, namely to assist in the formulation of national social welfare policy measures.
Since 2001, the Institute has also covered the field of family and family policy, and since 2004 also the field of the situation of the welfare of children and young people. For this purpose, the Children's Observatory was established within the Institute at that time, which operated until the reorganization of the Institute in 2022.
In 2010, the Institute also began to deal with the field of disability care, shortly afterwards with the field of long-term care and, in recent years, also with the field of deinstitutionalization.
