Through the integration of social workers into schools, the Children First practice in Ghent offers more comprehensive care for kids and families. Like a student counsellor, a social worker from the Public Centre for Social Welfare (PCSW) is integrated into a school where they work as a part of the staff. Each member of the school staff has the authority to direct families to the PCSW worker. The PCSW employee evaluates families and assists them in resolving problems.

Some schools choose to cooperate through consultation; the school team can schedule a meeting with the PCSW in these instances. In certain schools, cooperation takes the form of consultation. The school team can schedule an appointment for the family to meet with the PCSW staff, and this meeting can happen either at the school or at their home.

The collaboration itself is highly effective. Faster and more lasting solutions result from consulting with several partners (in this case, the schools) and exchanging information. The PCSW can establish family-centred integrated care systems in collaboration with the schools. By working closely with schools, it is possible to identify a family's circumstances more accurately and connect families in need with financial assistance (integration income, child benefit, unemployment benefit, etc.), material aid (food parcels, emergency medical aid...), and administrative support.
