The municipality of Östersund realised that by assuring the safety and security of individuals with disabilities and other vulnerable groups, the use of digital technology may improve their independence and overall health.

A portable GPS alarm watch is one of them, as is a gadget with an alarm button that can be pressed to alert emergency personnel and the person's relatives, who can then find them. There are 150 of them in use in Östersund, and they are effective in giving disabled persons and their families a sense of security. Furthermore, digital keys enable caregivers to open a user's front door using an app on their phone, reducing the amount of time spent getting ready for a home visit. In Östersund, 1,400 of these are in use.

Another example is remote home security cameras. These cameras are put in service users' bedrooms and can check if they are in bed at night. Moreover, professionals providing care for a person with disabilities or any other service user can access an online platform to review data that service users utilising digitally capable bodyweight scales and sleep sensors can automatically post onto the "internet of things." Staff members can verify the person's basic information, which eliminates the need for routine physical examinations.

Overall, the integration of these many technologies has allowed personnel to devote more of their time to user care rather than to travel or office work. The municipality will also benefit from cost savings due to the more effective utilisation of staff members' time. The development of service users' freedom and health is ultimately the most significant accomplishment.
