The City of Genk's “Baby on the Way” support system provides low-threshold, trauma-sensitive support for expectant parents, particularly those in vulnerable situations, through an integrated network of health, social care and family services. The initiative combines referral, assessment, tailored support and preventative parenting courses to ensure the best possible start for children during their first 1,000 days. In the past two years, the programme has supported 40–45 referred families annually, with referrals expected to increase significantly following the introduction of a new screening tool in 2026.
