In Hungary, if most residents wish, a “residential self-government” can be founded. Residential self-government serves to honour the interests of the residents in the broader community. An elected representative is assigned to execute the tasks outlined in the organisational and operational regulations of the institution. The residents elect officers, leaders, and presidents of the residential self-government. All people appointed must represent the interests of the residents. Decisions made on behalf of the residents are then sent to the head of the institution.

The most crucial tasks of the self-government initiatives are as follows. First, the interests of carers are represented in the community. Second, quality of care must be ensured within the institution. Third, residents must be encouraged to submit complaints/ problems when they arise, and they must be handled appropriately. Examples of other essential tasks include events organisation, protection of client’s interests, promoting the right to self-determination, transferring information, external networking, collecting, discussing and enforcing resident’s interests, operations of various forums, acceptance and compliance with the rules of cohabitation, and supporting members to exercise their rights.

More specifically, the self-government initiative aims to produce the chance for care home residents to actively engage in and have autonomy over their lives in the facility where they reside. This project ensures that residents are granted a stronger feeling of self-efficacy. Furthermore, this project gives a voice to residents who wish to express their opinions on the care they receive. With this initiative, residents can practice self-determination through the activities established. Finally, this project provides the space for residents to become fully embraced and supported in the broader community.
