‘Knowledge is Power’ is a timeless adage that continues to resonate today.
In an ever-evolving world, knowledge equips us with the tools to create meaningful change and build better systems. Facts, information, and lived experiences provide the foundation for innovation and improvement, particularly in sectors that impact people’s lives directly, such as social services.
This is precisely why the European Social Network (ESN) established the European Social Services Conference (ESSC): to serve as a platform for knowledge exchange, collaborative learning, and the collective pursuit of better social outcomes.
A global forum
The 33rd edition of the ESSC brought together a truly diverse assembly:
- 670 delegates
- Representing 219 organisations
- From 38 countries
This diversity enriched every discussion, session, and interaction. Delegates included local, regional and national government officials, policymakers, social service professionals, technology providers, academics, and representatives from NGOs. The variety of perspectives created an environment where the exchange of knowledge inspired the active creation of new ideas and solutions. It was a gathering that underscored the value of learning from each other’s experiences and adapting solutions across borders. ESN CEO, Alfonso Lara Montero, emphasised this point in his closing address at the conference: “Some might think that working at an international level is far removed from everyday realities but for those sharing their expertise with colleagues, there is nothing more relevant and thought-provoking.”
A transformative programme
As societies face growing socio-economic pressures, from aging populations to rising inequality and the impact of global crises, the ESSC 2025 conference programme provided a timely and practical roadmap to map out solutions to these challenges.
The sessions focused on two pivotal themes, relational welfare approaches and welfare technology. What emerged was a compelling narrative: when human connection and technological innovation work in harmony, real transformation becomes possible.
When technology is applied alongside relational, person-centred practices, it can empower individuals and strengthen communities. The conference made it clear that technology must serve people and not replace them. Without personalisation and genuine human engagement, digital solutions risk becoming barriers rather than enablers.
Key Highlights:
- 34 sessions offered practical tools, case studies, and policy insights
- 9 local study visitsoffered a window into work in practice
- 113 presenters showcased real-world projects and innovations that are already making a difference
- 24 keynote speakers inspired and led a call to action for transformative change
Each session reflected a shared commitment: to use knowledge not just as an abstract concept but as a practical catalyst for change in social services.
The power of collective learning
ESSC 2025 reaffirmed that knowledge is most powerful when it is shared. It is through open exchange, cross-border collaboration, and a willingness to challenge conventional thinking that we can shape the future of social services to be more inclusive, resilient, and responsive.
ESN’s partnership with the City of Aarhus, the Regional Government of Central Denmark, the Danish Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing the Ministry of Senior Citizens, is what underscored and enriched the programme, setting the tone to encourage learning and exchange.
The conference was not just about listening, it was about building connections, sparking ideas, and inspiring action. Whether through workshops, panel discussions, or informal networking, the conversations initiated here will ripple far beyond the three days of the event.
Looking ahead
As we reflect on ESSC 2025, one message stands out: knowledge is a living resource. It grows as we exchange it, and it gains power when we apply it. The challenge now is to continue the dialogue, implement the insights, and carry the lessons forward into our communities and organisations.
The European Social Services Conference has once again proven to be a vital hub where ideas turn into action, and where the power of knowledge can truly shape a better future.
Preparations for the 34th edition are already underway – we look forward to welcoming you to Malta in May 2026!
