The European Social Network (ESN) has officially launched the 2025 edition of the European Social Services Awards (ESSA), under the theme ’Social Services: Creating Lasting Change’.  Hosted by Madrid City Council from 13–14 November 2025, the awards will bring together leading voices from across Europe to recognise transformative initiatives that are rethinking how social services are planned, delivered, and evaluated.

At the heart of this edition is a focus on long-term impact, with a spotlight on projects that offer sustainable solutions to deep-rooted social challenges. From integrated support for people in vulnerable situations to digital platforms that empower service users, the 2025 awards will honour those working to make social services more accessible, human-centred, and resilient.

This year’s awards also coincide with a significant milestone, the 25th anniversary of ESN - marking a quarter-century of work to strengthen communities through improved, more inclusive social services. Since its founding, ESN has grown into a network of over 180 member organisations and has played a key role in driving investment in social services, while championing the development of person-centred, future-proof approaches to care and support.

ESSA 2025 will feature ten award categories, each designed to reflect the diversity and complexity of the sector:

  • Social Services Delivery Innovation
  • Digital Transformation and Technology in Social Services
  • Strengthening Communities and Social Inclusion
  • Public Sector Collaboration in Social Services
  • Research for Social Services
  • Public-Private Partnership in Social Services
  • Children, Families, and Youth Support
  • Disability and Accessibility in Social Services Award
  • Ageing and Long-Term Care Excellence
  • Leadership in Social Services

Introducing this expanded set of award categories, ESSA 2025 offers more opportunities for organisations to gain recognition from the wider social services community. This year’s edition also features a new category that honours outstanding individual leadership, celebrating people who have made a lasting impact through their transformative vision and strategic governance. Collectively, the categories aim to honour a wide range of approaches, from groundbreaking service models to community-based initiatives and cross-sector partnerships.

Applications are open from 22 April to 30 June 2025, and eligible organisations include public authorities, third-sector organisations, research institutions, and private-sector actors involved in the planning, design, and delivery of social services. Projects will be evaluated by an expert judging panel, with shortlisted entries then proceeding to a public vote. The winners will be announced during the awards ceremony in Madrid this November.

ESSA 2025 offers more than recognition – it’s a platform for learning, exchange, and connection. Organisations across Europe are invited to share their achievements, amplify their impact, and empower others. Apply now to have your work recognised and inspire social services leaders to create lasting change in communities across Europe!
